How to DTF Print and Press T-Shirts Like a Pro (Beginner-Friendly Guide)
Share
DTF (Direct to Film) printing is one of the most powerful and cost-effective methods for printing full-color designs on garments, especially cotton and polyester. Whether you're starting a custom apparel business or just printing shirts at home, this step-by-step guide will help you understand the full DTF print and press process.
🧰 What You Need for DTF Printing
Before jumping in, make sure you have the following equipment and materials:
DTF Printer (or converted Epson printer with DTF inks)
PET Film Sheets (cold peel or hot peel depending on your setup)
DTF Ink (CMYK + White)
DTF Powder Adhesive
Curing Oven or Heat Gun
Heat Press Machine
Lint Roller or T-shirt Pre-Press (optional but helpful)
🖨️ Step 1: Print Your Design on PET Film
Create or Import Your Design
Use software like Photoshop, Illustrator, or Canva to design your artwork. Save it as a PNG with a transparent background for best results.
Load the PET Film into the DTF Printer
Make sure the matte side (printable side) faces the correct direction. Load it flat to avoid smudges.
Print in Two Layers
First layer: CMYK colors
Second layer: White ink underbase
Your RIP software (like Cadlink or AcroRip) will manage this order automatically.
💨 Step 2: Apply and Cure the DTF Powder
Immediately After Printing, while the ink is still wet, sprinkle DTF adhesive powder evenly over the printed area.
Shake off the Excess Powder by gently tapping the film.
Cure the Powder using one of these methods:
DTF Curing Oven: Set to 110–120°C (230–250°F) for 2–3 minutes
Heat Gun: Hold 4–6 inches above the design, evenly heating until powder melts (turns glossy)
⚠️ Do not use the heat press directly for curing—it will ruin the film.
👕 Step 3: Prepare the Garment
Place the T-shirt on Your Heat Press.
Pre-Press for 5 Seconds at 150°C (300°F) to remove moisture and wrinkles.
Use a lint roller to clean any dust or fibers off the print area.
🔥 Step 4: Press the Film Onto the T-Shirt
Place the DTF Film (Design Facing Down) on the Garment.
Press at 160°C (320°F) for 15–20 Seconds.
Peel the Film:
For cold peel film: Let it cool completely, then peel slowly.
For hot peel film: Wait 5–10 seconds, then peel carefully.
🧼 Step 5: Final Press (Optional but Recommended)
To improve durability and softness:
Cover the print with a parchment paper or a Teflon sheet.
Press again at 150°C (300°F) for 10 seconds.
This step makes the print smoother and more resistant to washing.
🧽 Washing & Care Tips for DTF Prints
Wash garments inside out with cold water.
Hang dry or tumble dry on low.
Avoid ironing directly on the print.
